Since I was a kid, I’ve always had a million and one interests and hobbies. I was never one of those people who “knew their path” from an early age. Instead, I’ve always had a passion for discovery and experimentation.
Unlike a lot of entrepreneurs, I don’t have a single business that I put all my time into. Instead, I make money from a bunch of different sources, doing things that I like and am interested in. For someone like me, it’s a great way to make sure I don’t get bored and burnt out doing the same thing every day. Maybe you can relate 🙂
If you’re looking for the “quick read” background, here’s a one-paragraph summary:
I’ve been doing e-commerce and online business for over 10 years, both in the corporate world and out on my own. I’ve worked with hundreds of amazing entrepreneurs and information product creators, and have created many courses and websites of my own. Oh, and I’m a children’s author. I started this site and podcast because I’d love to help you discover and make money from what you like to do, too!
For the more detailed background, read on:
In college, I majored in Philosophy, which is a subject I grew to love in high school. Even though that should have been a death sentence for my career, it actually helped me become a much better thinker and writer, and to become curious about everything around me.
Once I entered the job world, I started using my curiosity and desire to “question everything” to find new ways to help the companies I worked for and create roles for myself where none existed. I became an “intrapreneur,” regularly coming up with new jobs for myself, while all the time wanting to become a true entrepreneur and work FOR myself.
In 2008 I started working for a company called ClickBank, which is a network for digital product vendors and affiliates. Suddenly I was surrounded by successful entrepreneurs making a living from their smarts and hustle, and it cranked my desire to work for myself up to a fever pitch. Even though I was moving up the corporate ladder and doing fun, interesting work, I was totally consumed with my desire to be out on my own.
I finally made this happen in June 2013, leaving the corporate world and starting my own business doing marketing consulting. However, I quickly discovered that while I enjoyed working with clients and helping them with their marketing, it still didn’t feel like I was following MY passion. I freaked out.
Then, in September 2013, my curiosity led me in an awesome, and totally unexpected, direction. I have two small kids and was reading books to them every night, often on my Kindle. I started noticing that many of the books were self-published, and it got me thinking, “I bet I could do this, too!”
Within 6 weeks I had published my first children’s book, The Knight Who Wouldn’t Sleep, and within 5 months of starting had published 4 books. Not long after that, I noticed that nearly everyone I told about being a children’s author told me, “I’ve always wanted to write a children’s book! You should teach people how you did it.”
That gave me the idea to create my blog and podcast Let’s Make Kids’ Books, which is the only show specifically focusing on self-published children’s authors. I then created a course teaching other people how to create, self-publish, and market their own children’s books. It has been a great source of income and fulfillment, knowing that I’m helping people achieve their dream of becoming a children’s author.
In the meantime, I’ve started and run a bunch of other blogs, websites, Facebook groups, in-person mastermind groups, and more. I love taking on new projects and sharing them with others. You Can Get Paid For That is my way to share what I’ve learned over the years with you, interview other awesome people I’ve met along the way who are doing interesting, inspiring things with their lives and businesses, and help you learn how you too can make money from what you like to do.
If you’ve read this far, thanks for your patience and interest! I hope you love the site and podcast and get a lot out of it. If I can ever help you, don’t hesitate to reach out and contact me.
